Itinerary
Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas – Ait Ben Haddou – Draa Valley – Zagora
Departure from Marrakech
The adventure begins early with pick-up from our riad or hotel in Marrakech. We leave behind the bustling red city to cross the High Atlas Mountains via the famous Tizi n’Tichka Pass at 2,260 meters of altitude. Along the way, we enjoy breathtaking views of mountains, lush valleys, and Berber villages that seem frozen in time.
Visit to the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou
One of the highlights of the day is visiting the UNESCO-listed Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou. This fortified ksar, a prime example of earthen architecture in southern Morocco, has been the set of many films and TV series such as Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Walking through its narrow alleys is like stepping back in time, offering a unique cultural experience.
Journey to the Draa Valley
We continue our journey south, crossing mountains and traditional villages until reaching the Draa Valley, Morocco’s largest palm grove. Stretching over 150 km, this oasis is dotted with palm trees and adobe kasbahs, creating a striking contrast against the desert landscape.
Arrival in Zagora and Camel Trek
By late afternoon, we arrive in Zagora, known as the gateway to the Sahara. Here, camels await to take us on an unforgettable sunset ride through the dunes. The desert sunset, with its golden and orange hues, creates a magical atmosphere etched in memory.
Overnight in a Berber Camp
The day concludes with a traditional dinner under the starlit sky at a Berber desert camp. We enjoy warm hospitality, traditional music around the campfire, and the unique experience of sleeping in nomadic-style tents (haimas), immersing ourselves in the spirit of the Sahara.
Day 2: Zagora – Draa Valley – Ouarzazate – Marrakech
Sunrise in the Desert
The second day begins with the magical spectacle of sunrise in the desert, as the first rays of light paint the dunes in shades of gold and red. After breakfast at the camp, we ride camels back to the starting point to rejoin our transport.
Return through the Draa Valley and Agdz
We make our way back through the Draa Valley, with opportunities to stop for photos of its lush palm groves and fortified villages. On the route, we pass through Agdz, home to the impressive Tamnougalt Kasbah, one of southern Morocco’s hidden gems.
Stop in Ouarzazate, the Gateway to the Desert
Before returning to Marrakech, we stop in Ouarzazate, nicknamed the “Hollywood of Africa” thanks to its world-famous film studios, where many international productions have been shot. We can also visit the Kasbah of Taourirt, an architectural masterpiece of adobe that once belonged to the powerful Glaoui dynasty.
Crossing the Atlas and Arrival in Marrakech
In the afternoon, we cross the High Atlas Mountains once again and return to Marrakech. The tour ends with a transfer back to our accommodation, carrying unforgettable memories of an authentic desert adventure.
